The memory of a brief visit to Burma had haunted Rory MacLean for years. A decade after the violent suppression of an unarmed national uprising, which cost thousands of lives and all hopes for democracy, he seized the chance to return. Travelling from Rangoon to Mandalay and Pagan, into the heart of the Golden Triangle, he hears stories of freedom fighters, government censors, basket weavers, farmers and lovers -- ordinary people struggling to survive under one of the most brutal and repressive regimes in the world. Under the Dragon is a perceptive and heartbreaking portrayal of contemporary Burma, a country that is shot through with desperation and fear, but also blessed – even in the darkest places -- with beauty and courage.

Sorcerers And Cigarettes: Falling Off the Map in Burma
Daniel Isaac Combs (Author)

Myanmar

Two years ago, the name “Myanmar” conjured up foggy images of dread: an imprisoned Nobel Prize laureate, brutal military rulers, a people hidden from the rest of the world by their own borders. Now, under a new president, the country is emerging from decades of isolation, welcoming the outside world and the change that comes with it.

This transformation came to the forefront last spring when Daniel Combs arrived in the country just days before the first free and fair elections in decades. In his debut book, Sorcerers and Cigarettes, he investigates the mood of the human side of the equation, how everyday Burmese people fit into the picture even as their country shifts gears on an international scale.

It is an unforgettable journey. From the trash-clogged alleys of Yangon, to the remote northern jungles, where he sneaks into rebel territory to spend time with soldiers waging a civil war for autonomy, Combs presents a thoughtful, funny and indelibly human portrait of an utterly unique country, of a people both blessed and cursed by history. Along the way, he finds that Myanmar just might have something to teach him about himself, too.

This is the delightful story of an eighteen-day bus pilgrimage to sixty pagodas across Myanmar. As the author settles into her seat, the aisle blocked with luggage, she trains our eyes on the collection of characters that, like it or not, will be her traveling companions for the whirlwind tour. This native tourist amuses us with her adventures of eating at roadside cafes, climbing up pagodas, bathing in rivers, shopping at markets, and sleeping on temple floors. Along the way, she encounters deeply rooted cultural values and develops camaraderie with strangers that become like family for the duration of her travels. Ma Thanegi is a painter, writer, and journalist who was born and educated in Myanmar. She lives in Yangon (Rangoon) and is a contributing editor of the Myanmar Times and editor of Enchanting Myanmar, a travel magazine. She was detained for three years in Insein prison for her involvement in the 1988 uprisings as a personal assistant to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Ancient temples, elegant diplomatic missions, public gardens, bustling marketplaces, iconographic "joss houses," charming bungalows, and colonial clubhouses are just a few of the cultural wonders that await you in Yangon, the former capital of Burma (Myanmar). The city has what is perhaps the finest collection of early modern architecture to be found anywhere in Southeast Asia. This first-of-its-kind city map will guide you as you explore these sights, taking you down alleyways, tree-lined promenades, and major thoroughfares to uncover the historical and architectural significance of Yangon's breathtaking landmarks.

The map features three separate walking tours that will allow you to explore the wonderfully eclectic mix of fin de siècle architecture and the former grand boulevards of cinemas, shops, and cafes. Unlike other major Asian cities, Yangon has few skyscrapers yet maintains a "cosmopolitan ambiance" through the evocative appeal of its unique urban legacy. Yangon's buildings still tell wonderful stories. Included with the map are over a dozen rarely seen photographs and a special section that lists 187 historical landmarks in Yangon according to the township where they are located. These landmarks have been designated by the Yangon City Development Committee as preservation sites because of their heritage value.

Prepared by an expert on Burmese design and architecture, this map is a trusted guide to the many hidden treasures in the golden city of Yangon.

Bagan is one of the most magnificent and inspiring sites in Southeast Asia. With over 2,000 temples and stupas dotting its landscape, this ancient Buddhist capital provides travelers a unique opportunity to explore the evolution of Bagan's art and architecture over its 450-year history (850-1300).

In this Approach Guide, we explore the art and architecture of Bagan, looking specifically at the principle structures and artistic styles and highlighting why each is important to Bagan’s cultural history and how each evolved over time.

This Approach Guide is broken into two sections:

The first section, an overview, provides travelers with a deep understanding of the two types of religious architecture they will encounter in Bagan (temples and stupas) and the art forms used to decorate them (paintings and sculpture). To provide a complete picture, we provide floorplans, images that highlight specific features and decoration, descriptions of the prevailing Bagan aesthetic, subject matter, and stylistic development.

The second section provides detailed profiles of 21 specific sites that offer the quintessential examples of Bagan’s architecture, painting, and sculpture. For each site we first discuss the overall layout of the site, the exterior appearance and decoration, and finally the interior decoration and important architectural elements.

This Approach Guide contains:
* Over 120 high-resolution images.
* More than 20 floorplans with color highlights that make visual identification of key features easier.
* A high-level map of Bagan’s sites to ease navigation and plan your itinerary.

The overall goal of these site profiles is provide the traveler with what is most important, a framework for understanding each site and what makes it special.

In 1944, in one of its more inspired moments, the British Ministry of Information dispatched Cecil Beaton-- self-dramatizing exquisite, darling of London society, chosen photographer to royalty, and later the world-famous designer of My Fair Lady and Gigi--to the Far East to take pictures of the British Empire and its allies at war. The result was not only a superb collection of photographs but a breathtakingly vivid written portrait of India, Burma, and China at a historic turning-point in their histories. These volumes integrate both elements fully for the first time, offering the complete text of Beaton's narrative and a truly comprehensive selection of over 200 photographs.
Beaton was a great observer and, perhaps unexpectedly, a great describer. In remarkably few words, he can make you see, hear, smell, almost touch the dusty Burmese countryside, the shimmering, casual magnificence of a Bombay virtually untouched by war, or the rain-sodden, flea-bitten front lines in a China nearly destroyed by it. He was an acute observer of people, too, and these books offer revealing glimpses of representative wartime figures from Madame Sun Yat-sen and General Claire Chennault to anonymous British soldiers and Chinese peasants. There is mayhem, including an electrifying description of what it's like to live through a plane crash, and mordant social comedy that rivals (and explains much of) The Jewel in the Crown. Perhaps best of all are Beaton's accounts of the two great invariants of modern war--waiting for transport and enduring it--in all their exquisite variety.
A magnificent record of some of Beaton's most austere and disciplined photography and a welcome reminder of his almost forgotten literary gifts, these books offer a uniquely real picture of one of the most heroic episodes of recent history.

Read Emma Larkin's posts on the Penguin Blog

Over the years the American writer Emma Larkin has spent traveling in Burma, she's come to know all too well the many ways this brutal police state can be described as "Orwellian." The life of the mind exists in a state of siege in Burma, and it long has. But Burma's connection to George Orwell is not merely metaphorical; it is much deeper and more real. Orwell's mother was born in Burma, at the height of the British raj, and Orwell was fundamentally shaped by his experiences in Burma as a young man working for the British Imperial Police. When Orwell died, the novel-in-progress on his desk was set in Burma. It is the place George Orwell's work holds in Burma today, however, that most struck Emma Larkin. She was frequently told by Burmese acquaintances that Orwell did not write one book about their country - his first novel, Burmese Days - but in fact he wrote three, the "trilogy" that included Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. When Larkin quietly asked one Burmese intellectual if he knew the work of George Orwell, he stared blankly for a moment and then said, "Ah, you mean the prophet!"

In one of the most intrepid political travelogues in recent memory, Emma Larkin tells of the year she spent traveling through Burma using the life and work of George Orwell as her compass. Going from Mandalay and Rangoon to poor delta backwaters and up to the old hill-station towns in the mountains of Burma's far north, Larkin visits the places where Orwell worked and lived, and the places his books live still. She brings to vivid life a country and a people cut off from the rest of the world, and from one another, by the ruling military junta and its vast network of spies and informers. Using Orwell enables her to show, effortlessly, the weight of the colonial experience on Burma today, the ghosts of which are invisible and everywhere. More important, she finds that the path she charts leads her to the people who have found ways to somehow resist the soul-crushing effects of life in this most cruel police state. And George Orwell's moral clarity, hatred of injustice, and keen powers of observation serve as the author's compass in another sense too: they are qualities she shares and they suffuse her book - the keenest and finest reckoning with life in this police state that has yet been written.

For hundreds of years the golden stupa of the Shwedagon, the pagoda enshrining the sacred hairs of the Buddha, has dominated the landscape of Rangoon. Since the 19th century, it has been the spiritual symbol of the entire Burmese nation. Everyone who has been to Myanmar has a memory of their first visit to the Shwedagon, for all born in Myanmar, the Shwedagon is a cornerstone of their life and a guardian for their future. Shwedagon provides a multi-faceted view of this magnificent Buddhist shrine. The atmosphere and vibrancy of a visit to the Shwedagon is admirably captured in a series of photographs by Hansjorg Mayer. The texts, by archaeologist and art historian Elizabeth Moore of the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and Burmese scholar U Win Pe, discuss the history and evolution of the stupa, illustrated by many evocative old pictures and plans. This is a wonderful book for travellers to Myanmar and anyone with an interest in Buddhism.
