Myanmar

In 1993, Alan Rabinowitz, called "the Indiana Jones" of wildlife science by The New York Times, arrived for the first time in the country of Myanmar, known until 1989 as Burma, uncertain of what to expect. Working under the auspices of the Wildlife Conservation Society, his goal was to establish a wildlife research and conservation programme and to survey the country's wildlife. He succeeded - not only discovering a species of primitive deer completely new to science but also playing a vital role in the creation of Hkakabo Razi National Park, now one of Southeast Asia's largest protected areas. This text takes the reader on a journey of exploration, danger, and discovery in this remote corner of the planet at the southeast edge of the Himalayas, where tropical rain forest and snow-covered mountains meet. As we travel through this "lost world" - a mysterious and forbidding region isolated by ancient geologic forces - we meet the Rawang, a former slave group, the Taron, a solitary enclave of the world's only pygmies of Asian ancestry, and Myanmar Tibetans living in the furthest reaches of the mountains. We enter the territories of strange, majestic-looking beasts that few people have ever heard of and fewer have ever seen - golden takin, red goral, blue sheep, black barking deer. The survival of these ancient species is now threatened, not by natural forces but by hunters with snares and crossbows, trading body parts for basic household necessities. The powerful landscape and unique people the author befriends help him come to grips with the traumas and difficulties of his past and emerge a man ready to embrace the world anew. Interwoven with his scientific expedition in Myanmar, and helping to inform his understanding of the people he met and the situations he encountered, is this more personal journey of discovery.

Myanmar

Myanmar is a fascinating and intriguing country, full of contrasts. Its people are warm, friendly and welcoming; it's rich in archaeological sites and has areas of stunning natural beauty. Yangon, the gateway for most travellers, houses the awe-inspiring Shwedagon Paya, a gleaming gold zedi, and offers good examples of colonial-era architecture in a warren of historic streets. From here, you can visit Mandalay and the nearby fabulous temples of Bagan or take a trip on an old river steamer down the Ayeyarwaddy River. For the adventurous, there's trekking around Kalaw and for the less energetic, Ngapali Beach is a great place to relax. Enchanting Myanmar paints a portrait of this rapidly-changing country with informative text and brand-new images taken specifically for the book to introduce you to what will be a truly unforgettable visit.

This was a very difficult country to map, given the political situation in the country. We have been able to create a good base map, but are still suspicious about the condition of secondary roads. Map comes with insets of Yangon (Rangoon) and Mandalay (1:20,000).

BURMA - UNKNOWN PARADISE

BURMA
BURMA - UNKNOWN PARADISE
Ulrich Zagorski (Author)

Download: $9.99 (as of 11/19/2012 08:31 PST)

Myanmar

Burma, this strife-torn country, until recently almost inaccessible to foreigners - tourists and businessmen alike - has preserved much of the vanishing exotic atmosphere of the East. A brief glimpse of Rangoon and its Shwedagon Pagoda is all most visitors see of Burma, but Ulrich Zagorski lived in the country for six years and travelled widely. He not only visited the cultural monuments, but also came to know the Burmese people. He takes us around contemporary Rangoon, to a puppet play lasting all night, to the celebration of Thingyan - the Burmese New Year -, to a wedding and to other festivities, and explains customs and beliefs of the country.
The past is recreated by the author’s photographs of the poignantly lovely ruined cities of fallen dynasties - ancient Srikshetra, mysterious Mrauk-U, partly overgrown by jungle, royal Mandalay, splendid Amarapura, Ava and Sagaing and majestic Pagan, whose almost three thousand remains of temples and pagodas are a fraction of those built at the height of the kingdoms power.
Devotees of the Orient will be happy to have this affectionate and detailed impression of the fast evolving country that is Burma. As Rangoon, Pegu, Pagan, Mandalay, Mrauk-U, and other places have become more than legendary names, this beautiful land is beginning to share its many attractions with the world, hopefully not making the mistakes of other tourist countries.
This new edition of “Burma - Unknown Paradise” comprises the author’s experiences during his earlier long stay in that country, as well as recent visits to Burma. It is a background information about the country and its people, and gives incentives where to go and what to do, but is not intended to be a substitute for own decisions and travel plans.

Myanmar

This fully revised and well illustrated third edition of Burma intelligently evokes the magic and mystery of Burma, once the richest nation in Asia.

An isolated and remote country unspoiled by mass tourism, Burma is for the adventurous traveler, not the average tourist. Travel the great Ayeyawady River to Kipling’s Mandalay, the last of Burma’s royal capitals, explore the exotic Inle Lake and, of course, meet the people of this richly varied land, from the northern hill tribes to the amiable Burmese themselves. The river is a source of continuity and hope in a country at odds with itself. As it emerges from isolation, the nation of Myanmar is caught between repression and reform, dark and light. For armchair travelers and adventurers alike, this guide intelligently evokes the magic and mystery of what was once the richest nation in Asia. 87 Illustrations

This new edition of Andrew Marshall's classic book on Burma includes a gripping eyewitness account of the Saffron Revolution, the 2007 democratic uprising led by Buddhist monks.

Inspired by the diaries of a forgotten Victorian adventurer called Sir George Scott, Andrew Marshall set out to discover the real Burma - an impoverished nation then ruled by a repressive regime. Scott was a die-hard imperialist who hacked, bullied and charmed his way through uncharted jungles to help establish British colonial rule. Braving government spies and the after-effects of some powerful local hooch, Marshall retraces Scott's intrepid footsteps into Burma's remote tribal heartlands to encounter the bewitching 'giraffe women' and the former headhunters of the Wild Wa. His journey is an offbeat exploration of Britain's lost heritage and a powerful exposé of Burma's modern tragedy.

Myanmar

In one of the most intrepid travelogues in recent memory, Emma Larkin tells of the year she spent traveling through Burma, using as a compass the life and work of George Orwell, whom many of Burma’s underground teahouse intellectuals call simply “the Prophet.” In stirring prose, she provides a powerful reckoning with one of the world’s least free countries. Finding George Orwell in Burma is a brave and revelatory reconnaissance of modern Burma, one of the world’s grimmest and most shuttered police states, where the term “Orwellian” aptly describes the life endured by the country’s people. BACKCOVER: “A truer picture of authoritarianism than anyone has written since, perhaps, Orwell himself.”
—Mother Jones

“Mournful, meditative, appealingly idiosyncratic . . . an exercise in literary detection but also a political travelogue.”
—The New York Times

“Combining literary criticism with solid field reporting, [Larkin] captures the country at its best and, more often, its worst.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

“[A] sobering, journalistic memoir . . . A disquieting profile of a country and its people.”

Bagan is one of the most magnificent and inspiring sites in Southeast Asia. With over 2,000 temples and stupas dotting its landscape, this ancient Buddhist capital provides travelers a unique opportunity to explore the evolution of Bagan's art and architecture over its 450-year history (850-1300).

In this Approach Guide, we explore the art and architecture of Bagan, looking specifically at the principle structures and artistic styles and highlighting why each is important to Bagan’s cultural history and how each evolved over time.

This Approach Guide is broken into two sections:

The first section, an overview, provides travelers with a deep understanding of the two types of religious architecture they will encounter in Bagan (temples and stupas) and the art forms used to decorate them (paintings and sculpture). To provide a complete picture, we provide floorplans, images that highlight specific features and decoration, descriptions of the prevailing Bagan aesthetic, subject matter, and stylistic development.

The second section provides detailed profiles of 21 specific sites that offer the quintessential examples of Bagan’s architecture, painting, and sculpture. For each site we first discuss the overall layout of the site, the exterior appearance and decoration, and finally the interior decoration and important architectural elements.

This Approach Guide contains:
* Over 120 high-resolution images.
* More than 20 floorplans with color highlights that make visual identification of key features easier.
* A high-level map of Bagan’s sites to ease navigation and plan your itinerary.

The overall goal of these site profiles is provide the traveler with what is most important, a framework for understanding each site and what makes it special.
